.
Since then the Ludwik Solski State Drama School in Krakow hosts the faculty of „dance theatre“ in Bytom. The foundation of this new formation program goes back to a grant of the Polish Office of the Leonardo Da Vinci EU Program in 2005 to the Silesian Dance Theatre under the artistic direction of Jacek Luminski. It’s aim was to develop a novel dance curriculum for a university based dance program in Poland and it facilitated a new chapter in Polish contemporary dance, since it marked the foundation of the country’s first and so far singular professional dance formation.
The curriculum was developed with the involvement of a group of international experts from respected European dance schools (e.g. Folkwang Hochschule, Essen, Germany, Dartington College, UK) and renowned Polish scholars, dancers and actors. The structural possibilities for implementing the dance theater formation were finally provided by the State Drama School Krakow under the leadership professor Jerzy Stuhr who joined the international dance expert discussions.
Goals of Dance Theatre Department at the Ludwik Solski State Theatre School in Krakow are centered at compound processes of artistic versatility of an actor/dancer. The nine semester long curriculum, culminating in a state diploma, offers an interdisciplinary education combining modern dance, ballet, acting, art theory, philosophy, dance and theatre history, polish folklore, music, anatomy, deep body-mind techniques, new media, improvisation, directing and composition, and many more in one vibrant mode of new training for the profession. Although the main focus of the training is practical experience, the students are also well educated in the arts and related academic subjects. The physical training focuses on Polish Contemporary Dance Technique and style of artistic creation developed from flavors of local melting pot traditions (found in Jewish folklore as well as in Kurpian and Podhalan ethnic cultures) by Jacek Luminski within the framework of the Silesian Dance Theatre. Monthly intensive workshops by international teachers introduce the students further to educational and artistic positions in foreign countries. All these foundations including with physical performing of post-Grotowski and Boguslaw Schaeffer’s instrumental acting enable the students to create and institute their roles in contemporary dance theatre but also to develop their own artistic approaches. Theoretical and practical background received covers all the necessary factors providing springboard to original, creative and individualistic professional work in the arts.
